Depression Can Strike Anyone

A disease that affects millions of people in the United States is depression. All sexes, ages, social classes and religions can be affected with this terrible disease. It can have very devastating effects on a person’s life if left untreated. It can appear suddenly or it can show up after a very stressful period in your life like a death in the family, divorce and others.

The symptoms alone are enough to disrupt a person’s ability to do just about anything. Some of the things that can and be affected by this disease are sleeping, studying and the ability to enjoy their life. If a person finds that they have these symptoms and they persist longer than just a few days or weeks the person needs to talk about it with their doctor.

A person afflicted with depression feels isolated and alone.  Depression can also affect a person’s social life. They do not feel like going anywhere and just don’t feel social. Please everyone if there is someone that you know suffering from these symptoms reach out let them know that you are here and that you care.

Some other symptoms to pay attention to are sadness, irritability, loss of interest in both activities and hobbies, fatigue, sleep problems, thoughts of death or suicide, guilt feelings and a big weight loss or gain.  It can also make an impact on the persons overall physical health.

There is no known cause for depression although some doctors believe it is caused by a chemical imbalance of the brain. The doctor will most likely prescribe medications in this case. If the chemical imbalance is left untreated it can lead to thoughts of suicide. It can also lead to very violent tendencies. It is very important that if you show any of the above signs check with your doctor.

Seasonal Affective Disorder is one of the forms of depression.  Light therapy is used to treat SAD since it has been shown that the shortened sunlit days during the winter months is the major cause of this form of depression.

If you feel depression coming into your life, now is the time to find help.  Getting help or even asking questions in nothing of which to be ashamed.  Depression is a topic that many are afraid to talk about of feel guilty talking about.  While much of our world believes that depression is only temporary sadness or the blues, depression is very real.  This medical condition is as valid as a broken arm which needs to be set.  No one would make you feel guilty about seeking medical attention for that bone that is broken.

Refusing to find help may lead to many years of suffering and the lack of a happy and good life.  What a shame to look back and realize that you could have had help years ago, but you have lived in misery for a decade before you took action.  Depression cannot always be beaten on your own.  You will not regret getting help now rather than waiting.

While depression is treatable, you must begin the journey right now by taking that first step of getting the help that is needed.
